One of the most anticipated electro dance albums of 2007 has arrived. Justice are to release their debut album ‘†’ on the 11th June.

French producers Gaspard Auge and Xavier de Rosnay formed Justice at the start of 2003, originally remixing Simian’s ’Never Be Alone’ on Ed Banger Records.

Three years later, Justice found themselves winning an MTV Europe Music Award for the same track, now re-titled ‘We Are Your Friends’ and at the top of everyone’s most wanted lists.

This new album follows-up the success of ‘We Are Your Friends’ and the more recent EP ’D.A.N.C.E.’ with more classic dancefloor fodder.

Opening with the theatrical ‘Genesis’ and blending into ‘Let There Be Light’ - the album sets it intentions at the start. Massive basslines and sharp breaks mix with off-kilt organ, keyboards, guitars and small vocal samples to create an extremely dancefloor orientated album.

The strutting ‘DVNO’, ‘Stress’ and the huge ‘Waters Of Nazareth’ are also worth a mention - the latter having destroyed nightclubs for the last year or so.

This is a good album and Justice (like Digitalism last month) have done well to translate the dancefloor to the home stereo.

Justice are to take their new live show on the road at the end of this month including nights at Fabric and a batch of festivals including Glastonbury.

Digitalism - Idealism

Digitalism will release their debut album ‘Idealism’ on the 21st May through Kitsune.

Formed in 2004 by producers Ismail Tuefekci and Jens Moelle aka Palermo Disko Machine, Digitalism have made quite an impact in dance music. Having only released 3 singles prior to the release of this album, the German electro duo are best known for their remixes of Tom Vek, Cut Copy, Tiga and The Klaxons - which have been hammered in the nightclubs around the world by Erol Alkan, 2manydj's, Vitalic and Justice.

Usually the transition from dancefloor to home stereo can be a difficult one, tracks which sound incredible and exciting in the clubs can sound tame in comparison on home stereos and disjointed when collected onto a single record but on ‘Idealism’ - Digitalism have created a pretty solid album. The records feels like a complete record and the transitions from previous singles ‘Zdarlight’, ’Idealistic’ and ’Jupiter Moon’ to the new tracks is seamless.

This record has a good mixture of Daft Punk, The Presets, Soulwax and even, Air without ever trying to imitate. There are a few tracks which sound similar but as a whole, the record has enough highs and twists to remain interesting for the listener at home.

Digitalism have made a record which should cement their place at the top of club line-up’s and probably their place at the top of people’s play lists.

Manic Street Preachers - Send Away The Tigers

Manic Street Preachers return with their eighth album ‘Send Away The Tigers’ on 7th May. The title of the record is taken from a Tony Hancock phrase said when the great comedian was drunk.

Originally formed in 1986, the group have changed completely from the four young punks from Wales who wanted to be ‘4Real’. It’s been 12 years since the disappearance of Richey Edwards, at the time one of the bands principle songwriters and at least 11 years since the band biggest success, ‘A Design For Life’ in 1996 and the world is a different place for the Manics circa 2007.

The band have heralded the follow-up to 2004‘s ‘Lifeblood‘ as the return to their ‘classic’ sound. The new tracks on ‘Send Away The Tigers’ are grand and more epic than tracks from their previous efforts. ‘Indian Summer’ and ‘The Second Great Depression’ sound massive and echo the sound from 1996’s ‘Everything Must Go’ album.

The sound of ’Everything Must Go’ also echo’s on the punchy rock tracks. ‘Underdogs’, ‘Imperial Bodybags’ and the lead single ’Your Love Alone Is Not Enough’ are again, grander and more punchy than on previous records and better than anything off ‘Lifeblood’.

The Manic Street Preachers are finally happy with their sound and this album reflects it, the tracks on 'Send Away The Tigers' are not full of pomp and the lack of experimentation and simple riffs works in their favour. Overall this is a very good album and could possibly see the start of a resurgence for the Manics.

Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare

It was never going to be plain sailing was it? Arctic Monkeys burst onto the scene in 2006 with two number one singles, the fastest-selling debut album in British music history and the highly sought after Mercury music prize for good measure. Not bad for a band that started "because it were just something to do'. Media frenzy ensues. The band are heralded as saviours of British pop music, politicians are name dropping them for the 'down with the kids' vote and who could forget Peter Crouch's 'I Bet You Look Good...' inspired robotic World Cup celebrations?

Fast forward just over a year later and the band return with 'Brianstorm', a song that is far from bad but just felt like a heavier rehashed version of 'A View From the Afternoon'. Instead of the promo video displaying the originality of their past efforts (i.e. 'Leave Before The Lights Come On') we were greeted with some jiggy R'n'B Hype Williams knock off. Top marks for not trying indeed.

Saying that, it isn't all bad news in the Arctic Monkeys camp - far from it. As these freshly leaked tracks display, Alex Turner has lost none of his lyrical dexterity and the fresh production duties coming from Simian Mobile Disco's James Ford aren't as worrying as Klaxon's debut might have led you to believe. '505' with its haunting organ is beautiful, adventurous and hopefully a good sign of things to come.

Whether ‘Favourite Worst Nightmare' will stand up to success of 'Whatever People Say I Am...' remains to be seen. What is clear is that it's going to be a damn site better than hearing fucking Muse on the radio all day.

‘Favourite Worst Nightmare’ is released on Domino Records on 23rd April and is preceeded by the single ‘Brianstorm’ on the 18th April. Nine Inch Nails are to release their new album ‘Year Zero’ on the 17th April.

Formed in Ohio in 1988 by Trent Reznor, Nine Inch Nails are pioneers of the industrial rock/metal scene of the mid-90’s and have sold in excess of 20 million albums worldwide. Trent Reznor is the only official member of Nine Inch Nails and is responsible for the musical direction and the output of the band, taking on the role of singer, songwriter, musician and producer for the majority of Nine Inch Nails projects.

The new album ‘Year Zero’ is being launched with a mass-media viral marketing campaign orchestrated by Reznor and clues to the albums ‘concept’ have been found on the internet and on tour t-shirts.

The new album is a good progression on the poor ‘With Teeth’ and probably the most consistent album Nine Inch Nails have released since 1994’s ‘The Downward Spiral’. The familiar heavy guitars and harsh metallic drums still remain but the beats have got bigger, several tracks sound like they’ve been given the Aphex Twin treatment - sampled, looped and distorted out of recognition.

Despite all the studio trickery, this album can sound bland and highlights are few and far between. The first single ‘Survivalism’ and ‘God Given’ - the latter track sounding like an updated version of ‘Closer’ are high points on a very forget-able LP. ‘Year Zero’ is a good album but it lacks the knock-out punch to be a great album.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club return with a brand new album ‘Baby 81’ on the 30th April, released through RCA.

The groups fourth album and the follow-up to 2005’s critically acclaimed ‘Howl’ LP - the band have returned to the familiar rock n' roll, found on their earlier efforts. ’Baby 81’ also harks the return of original drummer Nick Jago after his absence from the last album.

There’s definitely a progression from ‘Howl’ - the country and blues elements have been toned down and the band have embarked upon making good-time rock n’ roll tracks including the openers ‘Took Out A Loan’ and ‘Berlin’.

There’s still a connection to their previous albums but upon hearing the 9-minute ‘American X’ and the multi-layered ‘All You Do Is Talk’ - BRMC transform into a different band. ’Baby 81’ is a good follow-up record after the critical acclaim of the last LP and definitely a return to form.

The band are planning to return to the UK later in the year for a full tour.

The Rakes - Ten New Messages

Formed in 2004, London-based band The Rakes are back with their second album ‘Ten New Messages’ released on the 19th March.

The follow-up to The Rakes’ debut album ‘Capture/Release’ - the new record is more energetic than its predecessor. The group have definitely been influenced by their time on tour with Franz Ferdinand, as the tracks sound tighter and have a very dancey feel.

The themes of the first record are repeated on ‘Ten New Messages’ - songs about the pub, work and boredom still remain and Alan Donohoes' lyrics still retain the wit of their debut record.

‘Ten New Messages’ is a decent follow-up to a decent debut and although it’s a progression on the first album, it remains to be seen if this will be The Rakes ‘breakthrough’ record. The band are on tour throughout March in support of the new album, info and tickets are available from here.

Nine Inch Nails - Live at Brixton Academy, SW9

Nine Inch Nails are currently in the middle of a UK tour, including a 4-night stint at Brixton Academy. It’s Thursday and we’re outside the Academy for the 2nd night of the 4-night run - a show which was in doubt up until Wednesday after Trent Reznor damaged his voice at a previous show in Birmingham.

At 9pm, the intro tape starts rolling and the familiar sound of ‘Pinion’ starts rumbling through the speakers. The band plough into a 90 min set which covers their entire career, older tracks such as ’Wish’ and ’Sin’ are dusted off and there’s also a couple of new tracks from the forthcoming ’Year Zero’ album. The lighting is superb on this tour and the sound in the Academy crisp, the drums especially sounding incredible.

The set suffers slightly from the odd pacing, slow quiet tracks are played together and tonight’s set-opener ‘Love Is Not Enough’ is a poor choice.

Classic tracks, ‘March Of The Pigs’ ‘Head Like A Hole’ and ‘Closer’ are received rapturously by the crowd and the highlight of the night is ‘Hurt’ - sung by the whole of the Academy. A very good show considering the unusual stop/start setlist.

'Boys and Girls in America' is actually the third album from New York based The Hold Steady, but their first to receive an official release in the UK.

The title of the record is scribbled from a line in Kerouac's 'On the Road' & if you think Springsteen mixed with The Replacements & add a dash of The Pixies, you won't be far off the beaten track.

The songs feature three main characters - 'Teenage Party Girl' Holly, 'Stoner' Gideon & 'Drug Pushing' Charlemagne who all cameo on the track 'First Night' - it makes for a killer concoction.

Right from the offset when the first powerchord kicks in & rips through the speakers on 'Stuck between Stations' you know you're in for a fun ride. A colossal & momentous 'American' album.

Kings Of Leon - Because Of The Times

After a two-year hiatus Kings of Leon are back with their third long player 'Because of the Times' released on the April 2nd.

Once again they've collaborated with producer Ethan Johns (Ryan Adams, Ray LaMontagne) and mentor Angelo Petraglia, who have co-produced the record together. Described previously by the band themselves as 'Creedence Clearwater Revival meets The Strokes' their latest offering sees them venture into a new direction.

In parts it's much heavier and dirtier than it's predecessor's with more rattling basslines, chugging guitars and off-beat drums. However, the familar rasping vocals still remain throughout.

The band still manage to maintain their Southern rock roots on gems such as the acoustic-led 'Fans' which recalls the Allman Brothers and 'On Call' which will be the lead single released on the 26th March.

MSTRKRFT - The Looks

Formed from the ashes of Canadian rock band Death From Above 1979, MSTRKRFT re-release their debut album 'The Looks' this week.

The electro duo featuring ex-DFA1979 bassist Jesse F Keeler and producer Al-P started remixing in 1995 and have remixed Armand Van Helden, The Gossip and Bloc Party amongst others.

'The Looks' was actually released last July but is to be re-released to capitalise on the success of their last single 'Street Justice 07' - which has been rocking the nightclubs since January.

MSTRKRFT are on tour in America at the moment but expect to see em' DJ-ing at this summer's festivals.

The Bees or A Band of Bees (depending on what side of the Atlantic you’re reading this on) return after a three-year hiatus with their latest effort, ‘Octopus’ - which is released on the 19th March.

The groups third studio album combines the same fusion of dub, rock, psychedelic and soul as previously displayed on 2002’s ‘Sunshine Hit Me’ and 2004’s ‘Free The Bees’ - which if you are already familiar with this band, is not a bad thing.

The Bees have a way of encapsulating classic sounds and genre's with a twist which makes them their own. ‘Octopus’ isn’t a perfect album, but it does have bucketfuls of charm, tunes and wit.

In a nutshell, it’s an enjoyable listen and worth it's price tag. Until then, here’s a little something to base your own opinions on…

American singer/songwriter Willy Mason played a special show in London on Sunday night. The gig was played at a competition winner's house in Ealing, as part of a special house-party tour.

The crowd of around 40 people were treated to 2 acoustic sets over the evening.

In the first set of the night, the singer performed his new single 'Save Myself' alongside previous singles 'Oxygen' and 'So Long' which sparked mass-singalongs from the audience.

After a few drinks with the host, Willy Mason later returned to play a second set which included an impromptu song about cheese and beans(!) as well as Townes Van Zandt and Johnny Cash covers.
